What does MIC stand for?
| Full form | Manufacturing Innovation Center |

| Type | Initialism |
The initialism MIC stands for Manufacturing Innovation Center in industrial research and policy. In the Chinese programme described by NIST, MICs connect industry and academic research around manufacturing technologies.
A manufacturing innovation centre, a project and a participating company are different units of description. NIST’s May 2025 report discusses China’s Manufacturing Innovation Centers within the Made in China 2025 strategy. It describes collaboration on applied research and notes that observations from selected centres may not generalize to every centre. This means an example of one centre’s structure should keep its location, technology focus and report date. The national strategy is wider than the individual centres. When a project note names a university and two firms as participants, it has not renamed those organizations as the centre itself. A useful summary states who coordinates the work, who participates and which result belongs to which project. Keep a proposed research milestone separate from a completed demonstration or commercial product. The letters MIC also appear in Microsoft Innovation Center; the full expansion and industrial-policy context determine which meaning is intended.

Meaning in context
- Manufacturing Innovation
- Applied research concerning manufacturing technologies in this programme context.
- Center
- A collaborating institution in the report, rather than the name of every participant or the entire national strategy.
Practical examples
Assign the result to its project
- Before
Invented project record: Centre Cedar coordinates Project Atlas; University Birch supplies a prototype. Draft: Every MIC has commercialized the prototype.
- After
University Birch supplied a prototype for Project Atlas, coordinated by Centre Cedar, in this fictional record.
The summary names the contributor and project. A prototype in one project does not establish commercial adoption across a programme.
Separate the programme from the strategy
- Before
Draft: Manufacturing Innovation Centers and Made in China 2025 are two interchangeable names for exactly the same thing.
- After
NIST describes the centres as part of the wider Made in China 2025 strategy.
The centres are one element in the stated policy context; the wider strategy is not the name of a single centre.

Use part of when the source describes a component of a wider strategy.
The report places the centres within a wider national strategy.
