What does PBI stand for?

Meaning and background of PBI
Full formProduct Backlog Item
CategoryBusiness & work
TypeInitialism

The initialism PBI stands for Product Backlog Item in Scrum. It is an individual item of work in the ordered Product Backlog, which evolves as the team learns what will improve the product.

A PBI is not necessarily a user story or a coding task. Scrum does not prescribe a universal ticket template. The Sprint Backlog includes selected Product Backlog items and the plan for delivering them; selecting an item is not the same as completing it.

Use PBI with clarity

How can I describe a PBI without confusing the desired result with an implementation task?

See all guidance

Draft an item

Start with the product change you want to make visible to a user or stakeholder.

Readers can remove an article from their saved list.

Review a task

Ask which product result the technical task supports.

The storage change supports saving articles.

Report progress
